This shall be the official thread for the Mario Kart Series. I'm starting this thread now because my friend and I are kicking each other's ass in Mario Kart DS over the (ahem) WI-FI. So, what's your favorite character, level, game, battle stage, etc. GO!!!

Double Dash. Wario. Waluigi. Baby Park. MASS EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE!
I don't really try for victory on that map...

I've been meaning to pick up Mario Kart DS for some time now. As it is, the only Wi-Fi compatible game I own is Metroid Prime Hunters, which I haven't actually played all summer (after the first week, there was never anyone online ). Until I get around to forking over the cash, however, I'd be hard-pressed to choose a favourite among the earlier releases. Of the SNES, N64, and GC releases, Mario Kart 64's battle mode was by far the best developed of the three. In early high school, my friends and I would play N64 games pretty much all night, every Friday and/or Saturday night, and MK64 was definitely in the top three for most played (with Goldeneye and Super Smash Bros.). We spent HOURS in Block Fort blasting each other with red shells and stars. I'd pretty much perfected my green shell aim, both at taking out oncoming red shells and demolishing my opponents' balloons. We designated a "no death from above" rule, wherein you couldn't fire a red shell at someone from the 'bove, as there's pretty much no way to dodge it, and some people had tended to "camp" on top of the blocks with red shells. Good times. With regards to racing, I'd also have to put MK64 on a pedestal just for the ease of play, but the courses of Super Mario Kart might just beat it out. While MK64 has more variety, the shortcuts you could come up with in SMK (intended or not) made just mapping out a strategy for each course a challenge. (The only really useful example of self-made shortcuts like that I can think of in MK64 is the Rainbow Road leap of faith, which I could pull off about 1 in 5 tries.) To balance all this out, MKDD, while having a less overall satisifying battle mode than MK64, and less inventive tracks than either, did include the Bob-Omb battle (especially fun in Luigi's Mansion), amazing versatility in mixing and matching characters and vehicles, a backseat driver (excellent for introducing new players), and Baby Park. That simple, yet elegant track alone beats out pretty much any track from the other games. The only real downside to the game is having a girlfriend who loves to throw Daisy on the back of her vehicle, just to use her voice to grate on my nerves. "Hi, I'm Daisy! Hi, I'm Daisy! Hi, I'm Daisy!" GRRR! If I had to pick a favourite, though, it'd probably be Mario Kart 64, for the sheer number of hours I could spend in Block Fort. In Double Dash, my favourite character/vehicle combination is usually DK and Baby Bowser in Bowser's spiky abomination. BB drives, DK drops huge bananas everywhere, and I bellow "MEGABANANA!" everytime he does so. Priceless.

The best part of Mario Kart DS......THEY BROUGHT BACK THE BLOCK FORT!!!!!! That and the wireless play. But you can't play battle over the net. That kinda sucks. Man, what fun you could have in the block fort. My friend and I were blasting each other tonight with red shells.....while we were waiting for his girlfriend in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

I have a perfectly good router....but the unavailability of high speed net in my area is a pain in the ass. I have to go to my friends houses to steal it...or war drive...

I'm heading in to town tomorrow for something related to schoool going on at the Delta. There's about 40 of us going on a bus, and a three hour drive...one way...can get pretty boring. Luckily, 4 or 5 of us have a DS, and most those have Mario Kart DS. Should make the three hours go pretty quick. That's assuming the batteries last that long. I figure I'll have to bring my adapter with me so I can charge while I'm at the Delta.

If you charge your DS the night before, you should have no problem with 6 or seven hours game play. This is with a DS fat, I donno about the DS lite

The only major difference with power drain between the lite and the origional is the back lite screen on the lite. If you have that up at full brightness it cuts your battery life a LOT, but without it I would think the battery life is about the same.

Turns out I only played about 6 matches of MKDS. Spent more time listening to MP3s actually.

Toadbell: I'd like to play MK64 battle mode against you sometime to see if I'm any good... I think I'm decent at it but... maybe we'll see sometime.

truly the most wonderful battle stage of all mario kart time was the original donut valley battle circuit in super mario kart (which i can't remember if i still own or not) but oh the wonderful time wasted in high school back in the nineties where instead of studying i was thouroghly trashing my friends at SMK, (now i feel so very sad, most of those guys i haven't seen in a decade, ones in texas and ones in afghanistan, damnable rotp).
